Centre takes control of irrigation projects on Krishna and Godavari river

(G.N.S) dt. 17

Hyderabad/New Delhi

The Centre has taken control of the irrigation projects Krishna river and Godavari river. Andhra Pradesh state government hasd filed a petition in the Supreme court on July 14 and the Central government late on July 15 night issued a notification fixing jurisdiction of the KRMB and the Godavari River Management Board (GRMB).

The two boards were formed under the AP State Reorganisation Act 2014 for overseeing water sharing between AP and Telangana. But in the last seven years, the Centre had not notified the jurisdiction of either KRMB or GRMB.

The notification will come into effect on October 14. All projects including barrages on the two major rivers will now be controlled by the two boards. Andhra Pradesh has welcomed the notification stating that it will protect the interests of farmers in the state.

All the projects in Krishna and Godavari basins in AP and Telangana will be managed and operated by the respective river boards leaving little scope to the state governments to take unilateral decisions with regard to water release.

The notification will come into force exactly after 90 days – on October 14. The Centre has also decided not to appoint any engineer/official in KRMB and GRMB.
